Peter Jackson will direct “Adventures of Tintin” followup

From REELZ: Almost from the start, Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg have talked about The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn as being the first part of a planned trilogy of movies based on Belgian author and illustrator Hergé’s classic Tintin comic book series.

It was revealed that Anthony Horowitz (Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker) had been hired to write the sequel, The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun. It wasn’t clear at the time who would direct the second movie, but it has now been revealed that Jackson plans to take the helm after he has finished working on the two-part prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit.

Jackson confirmed his intention to direct Prisoners of the Sun in a recent interview with the print edition of The Hollywood Reporter (via The Playlist), saying simply, “Yes,” and then leaving it up to Spielberg to elaborate.

[Sony and Paramount] were willing to do one movie with us and then give us the financial werewithal to develop a script, do all the visual storyboards and get it really in launch position. So we can launch pretty quickly on a second movie. The script is already written.

Like The Secret of the Unicorn, which combines two classic Tintin tales — “The Secret of the Unicorn” and “Red Rackham’s Treasure” — into one story, the second movie will draw from Hergé’s “Prisoners of the Sun” and the preceeding story, “The Seven Crystal Balls.” As for the third movie, neither Jackson nor Spielberg are talking, at the moment. However, Spielberg did make it sound like he would be eager to get back into the director’s chair for Tintin 3.

We haven’t talked about [who will direct the third movie]. But I had such a wonderful time working on this; it liberated me as a director because I was able to run around by myself. It was a big collaboration, but at the same time it was one of the most personal experiences I’ve had. When you can actually hold the camera and create your shots, you don’t have a lighting team, a key grip electricians… It’s like the old days with Super-8.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn stars the voice talents of Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Cary Elwes, Daniel Craig and Toby Jones. It opens in the U.S. on Dec. 23rd.
