From the violent world of “Watchmen” to the horrors of “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Jackie Earle Haley now adds the role of creepy caretaker to his resume in Tim Burton’s “Dark Shadows”. The “Little Children” star talked about his role, cast and drinking “booze” in an interview with the Miami Herald published Saturday.
Haley says he watched “Dark Shadows,” the 70’s gothic soap opera, and was a fan of the music.
“I didn’t run home, like my wife, to watch the show. But I totally remember it on TV. It was very indelible, the way the screen would spin, and the eerie music would kick in as Barnabas was hypnotizing someone.”
While there was plenty of sarcasm and wit in Haley’s recent roles as Freddy Krueger and the comic book vigilante Rorschach, Willie, the loyal but drunk caretaker for Barnabas Collins, offered a chance to bring out Haley’s humorous side.
“The script that Seth [Grahame-Smith] and Tim came up with was awesome. We ad-libbed a wee bit, but the script was the guiding thing.”
When the Herald asked about his inspiration to play the creepy caretaker, Haley’s channeled Willie quickly.
“How come you think he’s creepy?!”
Willie is an intense boozer, so Haley had to revealed what he was drinking in all of those scenes.
“Whiskey. Just kidding. Tea. I would spin around in circles before every take to get dizzy, just like a little kid.”
Haley is famous for his roles as a teen in “The Bad News Bears” and “Breaking Away.” His career found new life after he played Rorschach in Zack Snyder’s 2009 comic book film “Watchmen.” He is just finished shooting “Lincoln,” directed by Steven Spielberg.
Lastly, Haley talked about “Lincoln”
“I play Vice President of the Confederacy, Alexander Stephens. It was awesome working with Steven, and Daniel Day. . . . Cool little part, in a very interesting movie focusing on a very turbulent part of our history. Steven was awesome to work for, like Tim, and Daniel Day was amazing, like Johnny. I can’t tell you how lucky I feel to get to work with these guys.”
