Was “1941” bad, or just misunderstood?
In 1979, Steven Spielberg was at the top of the Hollywood heap, a veteran of blockbusters “Jaws” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” when he released “1941,” a comedy about panic setting in inCalifornia just after Pearl Harbor. Reviewers were not impressed, and neither were audiences.
Spielberg bounced back immediately, and spectacularly, with “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial,” and all was forgotten.
